School bus GPS tracking for Chennai schools
OMR and GST Road traffic, plus heavy rain from the northeast monsoon late in the year, can upset any Chennai bus timetable. A live view keeps parents and staff informed.
Chennai routes, from the IT corridor to the suburbs
Many newer Chennai schools sit along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and East Coast Road, around Sholinganallur, Navalur, Kelambakkam and Thoraipakkam. Others serve the southern suburbs along GST Road towards Tambaram and Guduvanchery, or the western side around Porur and Poonamallee. Buses on these corridors carry children past some of the city's heaviest traffic, and a single accident or signal failure can hold up a whole route.
The northeast monsoon, which usually brings most of Chennai's rain between October and December, adds flooded streets and sudden diversions in the months when exams are coming up.
What live tracking changes
- Parents see the delay, not just the clock. The live map and ETA show exactly where the bus is held up on OMR, so families can plan.
- An alert before the stop. The parent app warns when the bus is about 2 km away, so children wait indoors during heavy rain rather than at the roadside.
- Detours on record. When a flooded road forces a diversion, staff get a wrong-direction alert, and the trip history shows the route the bus actually took.
- Announcements. If the school changes timings for a rainy day, it can tell every parent through the app at once.
Attendance and cameras
An RFID card reader on the bus records each child getting on and off, so the attendant's list and the parent app are always in step. On longer routes, school bus CCTV cameras with IR night vision cover the cabin, and a dashcam covers the road ahead, with footage stored for authorised access.
A sample set-up for a Chennai school
A school in Navalur with routes north to Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar and south to Kelambakkam might fit a tracker and RFID reader on every bus, add dome cameras to its longest routes, and put UHF readers at the gate for campus arrival. In the weeks before the monsoon, the transport manager can check trip history for the stops that were missed or delayed last year and plan alternatives with the route planning tools. The actual plan depends on your school. We build it with you.
Keeping the office informed
The transport manager dashboard shows all buses live, all pickup and drop points, and which stops were visited or missed. The admin console tracks vehicle documents and maintenance, and Satcop provides WhatsApp and on-call support.
