School bus CCTV cameras and dashcams
A dome camera watches the cabin, a dashcam watches the road, and both are linked to the bus location. Satcop India supplies and installs them as part of its school bus system.
Why schools put cameras on buses
GPS tells the school where the bus is. It cannot show what happens inside the bus, or what happened on the road just before a sudden stop. Cameras fill that gap. They discourage bad behaviour on board, give the school a record to review after a complaint or incident, and let authorised staff check the cabin when something seems wrong. For parents, knowing the cabin is covered is often as reassuring as the live map.
The camera kit

- 4G dome cameras. They are mounted on the cabin ceiling, with IR LEDs for night vision, so early-morning winter pickups and late returns are still recorded clearly.
- Wide-angle dashcam. It faces the road and records what the driver saw, which is useful after a near miss, a collision or a complaint about driving.
- Driver monitoring (optional). A driver monitoring system (DMS) camera watches the driver's seat.
- Two-way audio (optional). Authorised staff can speak to the cabin, where the package includes it.
- Event marking and video analytics. Marked events make the right clip easy to find later.
Footage tied to the bus location
Because the cameras are part of the same system as the school bus GPS device, video comes with location context. When someone asks what happened near a particular stop on Tuesday afternoon, the school can match the trip history to the footage rather than scrolling through hours of recording. The system can also flag unusual activity such as speeding, unauthorised stops and route deviations.
Where footage is stored, and who can see it
Recording can go to the cloud, to the device on the bus, or to both, depending on the set-up. Footage is kept for authorised access only. The school decides who is authorised, for example the principal, the transport manager and the security head. A live 4G camera feed is available where enabled and depends on the school package. Where the school turns it on, a live view can also appear in the parent app. We confirm what your package includes at the demo.
Cameras record children, so treat access as seriously as you treat student records. Agree in writing who can view footage, who can download clips, and how long recordings are kept before they are overwritten.
How many cameras does a bus need?
It depends on the size of the bus and what you want to see. A common pattern is one dome camera covering the cabin and one dashcam facing the road. Longer buses may need a second dome camera so the back rows are covered. Schools that worry about the driver's conduct may add driver monitoring. We plan camera positions bus by bus during the site visit, because seat layout and roof height vary.
| Camera | What it covers | Typical reason to add it |
|---|---|---|
| Dome camera (cabin) | Students, aisle, door area | Behaviour on board, complaints, younger children |
| Dashcam (road) | Road ahead | Driving complaints, near misses, incidents |
| Driver monitoring | Driver's seat | Checking driver conduct |
Dome camera or dashcam?
They do different jobs. A dashcam only sees the road, so on its own it tells you little about the children inside. A dome camera covers the cabin but not the road. Most schools that add cameras choose both. We explain the trade-offs in our blog post dome camera vs dashcam for school buses.
Installation
Satcop supplies and installs the cameras on your buses, alongside the GPS tracker and the RFID reader if you have them. Cameras can be quoted with a new system. If your buses already have Satcop tracking, ask us at the demo whether cameras can be added to them.
Buying checklist
- Which cameras are in the quote: dome, dashcam, driver monitoring?
- Do the cabin cameras have night vision?
- Where is footage stored, and for how long?
- Who can view it live, who can download it, and how is that controlled?
- Is a live feed included, and does it depend on the package or data plan?
- Is the footage linked to GPS trip history?
- Does the quote list each camera, the installation, support and GST?
Cameras work best as part of the full school bus tracking system, with GPS, attendance and alerts. To understand what affects the price, see our price and quote page.
Frequently asked questions
Which cameras does Satcop offer for school buses?
4G dome cameras with IR night vision for the cabin, wide-angle dashcams for the road, and optional driver monitoring and two-way audio.
Can parents watch the camera feed?
A live 4G camera feed is available where enabled. It depends on the school package, and we confirm it at the demo.
Where is footage stored?
In the cloud, on the device or both, depending on the set-up. It is kept for authorised access only.
Is a dashcam enough for a school bus?
A dashcam records the road, not the cabin. Most schools add a dome camera to see inside the bus.
Can cameras be added to buses we already track?
Cameras are optional and can be quoted with the system. Ask us at the demo whether they can be added to buses you already track.
How much do school bus cameras cost?
We quote per school. The price depends on how many buses you have, the number and type of cameras, storage and the live-feed option.
