School van GPS tracking

Vans carry a large share of India's school children, often on the narrowest lanes and the earliest pickups. They deserve the same tracking as a full-size bus.

Why vans need tracking too

A school van usually carries fewer children than a bus, but it goes where buses cannot: into narrow lanes, gated societies and older neighbourhoods. Vans often start earlier, make more stops per child and are driven by a single person with no attendant. Parents worry about vans for exactly those reasons. When something is late, there is no second adult to call, and the van is harder to spot in traffic.

Tracking closes that gap. The same 4G GPS tracker, apps and attendance tools that Satcop fits on school buses also fit on vans, so a school can run one system for its whole fleet.

What goes in the van

  • A 4G GPS tracker. It sends the van's location about every 5 seconds, with fallback tracking when the signal dips. Satcop designs and makes the tracker in India and installs it. See the GPS device page.
  • An RFID card reader (optional). Children tap their card when they get in and out, so the school knows who travelled. Read more about RFID attendance.
  • A camera (optional). A dashcam or a small cabin camera gives a record of the trip. See school bus cameras.

What parents get

Parents use the same app as bus families: a live map, an ETA, an alert when the van is about 2 km from the stop, a list of their children on one screen, leave requests and a button to call the driver. For a parent whose child is the first pickup at 6:30 in the morning, knowing the van has left the previous lane is the difference between waiting calmly indoors and standing at the gate guessing.

What the driver gets

Van drivers usually work alone, so the driver app matters more than it does on a bus with an attendant. It shows the trip, the navigation and the children in pickup order. If something goes wrong, the driver can send an SOS to the school admin from the app. If the van goes the wrong way, staff get a wrong-direction alert.

School-owned vans and private van operators

Some schools run their own vans. Others work with private van operators, or parents hire a van owner directly. The system can help in each case:

  • School-owned vans appear on the same transport dashboard as the buses, with the same stops, student allocation and document expiry alerts.
  • Vans run by an operator for the school can be fitted and tracked on the school's dashboard, so the school sees every vehicle carrying its students. Our page on monitoring contractor buses covers this in more detail.
  • Van owners who serve several families can talk to us about a set-up for their own vehicles.

Planning van routes

Vans are flexible, which makes them easy to overload with stops. Trip history shows the real time each van route takes. A transport manager can use it to see when a van is doing too many lanes in one run, and split or rebalance the route. The route optimisation page explains how the stop map and history support that.

Getting started

We start with a demo, then fit the trackers, set up the stops and students, train the drivers and help the school introduce the app to parents. Vans and buses can be added in any mix. For pricing, ask us for a quote on the price and quote page; we price each school's set-up after seeing the fleet.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same tracker used on school buses go in a van?

Yes. Satcop fits the same 4G GPS tracker in school vans, and the van appears in the same apps and dashboard as the buses.

Our van drivers work alone. How do they raise an alarm?

The driver app has an SOS that alerts the school admin. Staff also get a wrong-direction alert if the van leaves its planned path.

Can parents track a van the same way as a bus?

Yes. Parents get the live map, ETA, an alert about 2 km before the stop, and a call-driver button.

Can we track vans run by an outside operator?

Yes. Vans run for the school can be fitted and shown on the school's dashboard, so the school sees every vehicle carrying its students.

Do you publish van tracking prices?

No. We quote each school after seeing the number and type of vehicles and the options chosen.
